As of next week we will be moving to our winter schedule. In a bid to get more classes on and also more open gym time, both the mornings and evenings have been tweaked. The major change is that there will now be morning classes on a Tuesday. The other major change is that the 09:00 class will be moving to 08:00. There will be additional open gym time from 09:00 to 11:30 on the mornings that there are classes. The existing afternoon open gym will now start at 16:00 to give extra time for those on separate programmes. Plans are ongoing for further sessions at 19:30, but for the time being, Yoga will continue on a Monday night and Barbell on a Tuesday night.
Coaching Team
Martin Uttley will be joining Pat and I in taking regular classes. Specifically, the new Tuesday morning sessions, but also slotting in where he can on other sessions. Martin is a well qualified personal trainer and CrossFit coach and is a real asset to the team. He is highly detailed in his breakdown of movement and, I’m sure, everyone will benefit from his coaching tips and workout tricks. If we’re all really nice to him, we might drag him back over from the Dark Side at Fitness First!
Sophia Tapper completed her CrossFit Level One cert. on the weekend and will become part of the team on an internship. For the next few months she will be assisting in classes, coaching individuals and small groups through movements and workouts in a bid to build her experience as a coach. We all know Sophia as a fantastic athlete and competitor, but also as one of the friendliest people at the gym. I’m sure she will develop into an outstanding coach with these assets.

Use of Open Gym
Open gym time must be used effectively. If you are coming in for recovery purposes, that’s fine, just make sure you are actually working on recovery! Skill work is essential and open gym is a time when you can dedicate your time and focus, just make sure you have a plan of action so you can be as productive as possible. Following a particular programme or topping up your class work is totally fine, I would appreciate it if you would run the programme past me before getting started so that we can determine if it’s right for you. I will also be asking for regular feedback on your progress to make sure you stay on track. Again, have a plan…you must have a plan!
